June Deveau is a visual artist living and working in the Southwestern community of Nova Scotia, Canada, better known as " the French Shore". The inspiration that guides June through her work is gathered from the rich cultural background which is rooted in the Acadian villages along St. Mary’s Bay. She endeavours to express the beauty of this area and to honor the traditional crafts, values and skills of the past. Many of the titles for her paintings are written in acadian french.
Painting since 1980, June has over the years studied with several well-known artists and has participated in various solo and group shows across the province and New Brunswick. While she primarily works with oils and acrylics on canvas or masonite boards, she also enjoys working with watercolors, drawing, monotypes, and linocuts. Color, texture and form have always fascinated her. By combining both brush and palette work with various techniques, she has achieved a unique style.
In 2003, she opened June Deveau Galerie Studio, a small rustic gallery in the Acadian village of Saint-Alphonse, close to her home where she resides with her husband, a son and a daughter. The creations of June Deveau are shown in private collections in all the provinces of Canada, in France, Japan, England, United States some of which are Lousiana, New York, Philadelphia, California, Florida, Indiana and Connecticut.
Artist's Statement
Through my work, I express my attachment to traditional values which have been passed on through generations. For many years, the subject matter of my work consisted of seascapes, flowers, landscapes and still life arrangements, however I felt that there was a missing element. One day while staring at a blank canvas, I remembered a memory from my younger years. I saw myself as a young girl sitting by the family kitchen stove, listening with awe to the many stories expressed by family and friends about our heritage and our culture. In the Acadian communities along Saint-Mary's Bay such gatherings were an usual occurrence where music, dance, laughter and tears were often shared.
With brisk brushstrokes and muted earth tones, I attempted to transform these stories and emotions to my canvas. Very quickly an image appeared, which for me did exactly that. This was the beginning of my journey with this theme.
I primarily work with oils and acrylics on canvas and masonite boards, combining both brush and palette knife work. Exploration of colour, form, texture, composition and diverse media permits me to share with the viewer my personal impressions.
Realizing that my textured impressionistic brushstrokes would not go away, I accepted the fact that my style of painting would not describe every detail but rather attempt to evoke emotions by light, form, color and movement. This allows the viewer to make the image their own, which I think is the ultimate compliment.
